Set your stall outHow often do you go out on the golf course with a game plan? If the answer is never, I would like to offer you a few tips to help you maximise your ability whilst playing. I’m often amazed watching the tournament professionals hitting an iron club from the tee on holes measuring 450 yards plus. This is simply to keep the ball on the fairway and retain control for the approach shot. OK, so most golfers don’t have the length to achieve this but select three or four holes on your home course that you historically struggle on and produce a MINIMUM RISK game plan for each one. Use clubs that will reduce your chances of getting into trouble. The fairly recent ‘long drive’ phenomenon has brought with it a breed of golfers hell-bent on trying to out drive their playing partners and proceeding to hit as lofted a club as possible into the green to boost credibility in the 19th. To a tour player all the clubs in the bag are like tools with each one having a different job to perform. The numbers on them are simply to differentiate one from another. You MUST select a ‘tool’ that will get the job done for YOU and allow you to swing under control. Put a game plan in place that will work for your game and ability and STICK TO IT! If this means leaving the woods at home or using a lower numbered ‘tool’ than gloating playing partners then so be it. It’s a small price to pay to shoot lower scores. |
